Frequently asked questions
Answers to the questions clients ask most often. No legal jargon, just clear information.
For companies and employers
When does a foreign worker’s start need to be reported? ⌄
As a general rule, the foreign worker’s start must be reported no later than the day work begins. From October 2025, the notification must be made before the actual first day of work.
What is the difference between an employee card and a work permit? ⌄
An employee card is a dual document serving as both residence permit and work authorisation. A work permit only authorises work and is often combined with another residence title.
What must a company prepare before the employee starts? ⌄
The employer must verify the residence status, ensure the employment contract, and where required report the vacancy and meet Labour Office obligations.
For individuals
How do I know which type of permit I have? ⌄
It depends on the purpose of your stay and your nationality. The type is often indicated on the biometric card. If you are unsure, we can assess it together.
When should I renew my documents? ⌄
An application to extend long-term residence can generally be submitted no earlier than 120 days before expiry and no later than the last valid day of the document.
What if I need to change employers? ⌄
With an employee card, the change must be notified within the relevant time limits and approval must be obtained before the new arrangement can fully proceed.
